Designed a surreal, psychedelic reinterpretation of Alice in Wonderland for nostalgic adults, blending bold visuals with structured layouts for an immersive reading experience. Vibrant colors, swirling illustrations, and hand-drawn elements captured the story’s hallucinogenic essence while maintaining readability.
The book cover is set with a black background (representing the everyday material world) to balance the colourful illustrations and show the maximalism and enriching experiences within the world of the book, inviting the reader in. The main elements on the image show the form of a girl, Alice, made up of recognizable story elements, while illustrating them in an unconventional way.
The final design balances maximalist aesthetics with narrative clarity, transforming the classic tale into a mind-expanding visual journey.
The illustrated elements are eye-catching, but not immediately visible. Just like a psychedelic experience, the more the viewer looks, the more they are meant to see. Additional elements like the Cheshire cat’s upside-down smile, and the glow emanating from the dress, follow similar ideas of showing the viewer a glimpse of a colourful world, piquing their interest, and inviting them in to explore. The fonts capture the whimsical nature of the story while balancing legibility.
Just like psychedelia, the visual approach is an endlessly fascinating phenomenon that allows the person experiencing it to attach their own perception to the multiverse of madness it brings.
